Damp Coursing

What is Damp Coursing?

Damp Coursing is a horizontal barrier in a wall that is designed to prevent moisture rising through the structure by rising damp. These salts from the ground can absorb moisture from the atmosphere leading to wall dampness when there is high relative humidity. The damp proof course will be usually applied at basement levels, restricting the movement of moisture through walls and floors.

Why is damp coursing important?

If damp is left to develop for too long, it can eventually rot and cause significant structural damage to your property. This means that it is essential that any damp patches in your property are taken care of as soon as possible. Ultimately, undertaking a damp-proof course will help to prevent damp from the ground rising up the walls and damaging your property. For all new build properties, damp proof courses are a requirement in order to prevent rising damp from occurring.

What are the causes of damp?

• Small roof slopes or faulty junctions between roof slabs and parapet walls can cause damping
• Poor quality construction material
• Leakage through down passes can cause moisture
• Construction faults
• The rainwater falling on the outer walls & parapet causes moisture
• If the roof of low quality, rainwater can also enter into the house

What are the benefits of damp coursing?

Damp proof courses help to prevent dank and musty smells around your property that could arise from any untreated mould or damp patches around your property. The damp proof course is an important layer for all walls of the building that is provided near the ground in the wall to ultimately prevent dampness of the walls. If damp is left untreated, the damp can damage both your home and its inhabitants as untreated damp can cause significant structural damage to your home and potentially result in health issues if left untreated for long periods.
